I wasn’t programmed for any of this! It’s just not acceptable!

    — THE DOCTOR. PHAGE. 48532.4

The holographic Doctor has once again elegantly expressed our own feelings and frustrations. And the frustration, this time around, has to do with confronting new situations for which we have no prior experience.

These “new situations” can be potentially positive as well as harmful. Ironically, we’re often just as frightened of success as we are of failure or injury. The problem is less in the outcome than not knowing how to handle it.

So we take refuge in habit. Familiar routines give us a sense of security—even when those routines stunt our growth or keep us mired in destructive relationships. At least we know what to expect, right?

It’s the unexpected that frightens us. Or rather, that threatens our ego. Ego, after all, is our current “programming.” It’s a superficial “image” of Who We Are now. And like someone facing his own demise, the ego will do everything it can to preserve its “life,” the Status Quo.

Submitting to this rigid ego amounts to worshipping an “idol.” The Universe calls us to reject this image—first by taking responsibility for our own programming, then by changing it. And what was once “just not acceptable” becomes our greatest source of joy and fulfillment.

I’m in charge of my programming now. In spite of my fears, I welcome the new situations that lead to learning, growth, and transformation.
